Lifespan Extension Advocacy Foundation is hosting a conference in New York to encourage investment in rejuvenation technologies
NEW YORK, June. 27, 2018 — Lifespan Extension Advocacy Foundation (LEAF), a non-profit organization that supports scientific research on aging and longevity via its own crowdfunding platform, Lifespan.io, is hosting Ending Age-Related Diseases: Investment Prospects & Advances in Research, a conference to be held at Cooper Union in New York City on July 12th.
The conference is aimed at letting the NYC business community know of the current state of aging research and promoting collaboration between academia, rejuvenation biotechnology companies, and investors in order to foster the development of next-generation drugs and therapies that directly target the processes of aging and thus have the potential to prevent and cure age-related diseases.
The list of speakers includes renowned researchers and visionaries, such as Dr. Aubrey de Grey (SENS Research Foundation), Dr. Michael West (AgeX Therapeutics), Dr. Vadim Gladyshev (Harvard Medical School), Dr. Alvaro Macieira-Coelho (INSERM), and Dr. Vera Gorbunova (University of Rochester). Several rejuvenation biotechnology companies, such as Ichor Therapeutics, Intervene Immune, Oisin Biotechnologies, and Covalent Bioscience, will present their projects. Dr. James Peyer (Apollo VC) and Joe Betts Lacroix (YCombinator) are going to take part in panel discussions focused on the investment opportunities and bottlenecks of the nascent industry of healthy longevity.
LEAF President Keith Comito explains the reason for the conference: “There are currently two main factors holding back the development of therapies addressing the root causes of aging. Basic research projects themselves are underfunded, and even for those who prove their concepts, it is currently difficult to find the right investors to take a new therapy further, beyond the ‘valley of death’ of preclinical and clinical trials. These are the problems we are trying to solve with Lifespan.io and this conference. By inviting the public to support research directly we help more basic experiments happen, and by spreading information about the potential of rejuvenation technologies to the business community we can help foster alliances, leading to innovative therapies against aging hitting the market sooner.”
LEAF Vice-President Oliver Medvedik added: “The global population is aging rapidly, and the population of the United States is also affected by this trend. There is a respective drift in the structure of morbidity; age-related diseases now prevail. The existing medical technologies cannot effectively cure age-related diseases, but luckily for us, we now understand the root causes of aging well enough, and we can make these root causes our new therapeutic target. The benefit of dealing with the cause is that you can prevent the damage to health from happening, or you can effectively reverse the damage. The new interventions that we will discuss at the conference may bring hope for curing various age-related diseases.”
